Reading a Shaft Spec Sheet for Wind, Not Just Distance

Flex, torque, weight, and kick point all shape trajectory height and spin — which means they all shape how well a shot holds its window once the wind picks up. Here's what the numbers mean once you're on the launch monitor.

Flex

A Relative Label, Not a Fixed Standard

Flex ratings (Ladies, Senior, Regular, Stiff, Extra Stiff) aren't standardized across manufacturers — a "Stiff" shaft from one brand can behave noticeably differently from a "Stiff" shaft from another. Flex is better understood as how much a shaft bends and releases during the downswing relative to your swing speed and tempo.

A shaft that's too flexible for your swing speed tends to add spin and launch height — the opposite of what you want fighting into a headwind. Too stiff, and you may lose feel and struggle to load the shaft at all, which shows up as inconsistent contact rather than a clean trajectory problem.

Kick Point & Torque

The Two Numbers Most Often Ignored

Kick Point

Where a shaft bends most during the downswing shapes launch angle independent of the head's loft. A lower kick point generally launches higher and can balloon in a headwind; a higher kick point launches lower and holds a flatter, more wind-resistant window.

Torque

Torque measures how much a shaft twists under load. Lower torque generally means a more stable face angle at impact — useful when you're already fighting a crosswind trying to open or close your face for you.

Weight

A lighter shaft in the same flex rating tends to play softer and add spin, while a heavier shaft plays firmer with more control — often the difference between a shot that balloons and one that holds its line into the wind.

Material

Steel vs. Graphite vs. Multi-Material

Steel is heavier and more shaft-to-shaft consistent, the standard choice for iron and wedge shafts among players who want precise feedback and control under pressure. Graphite is lighter, increases swing speed, and dampens vibration — standard in drivers, fairway woods, and hybrids. Multi-material shafts blend a steel tip with a graphite body, a growing category in iron shafts for players who want reduced weight without losing feel.
