No club is more exposed to the wind than the driver — it's the shot with the most hang time and the least turf contact to steady it. A window-matched driver spec is usually the single biggest gain we make on a windy afternoon round.
Every Swing, Logged Calm and Gusted
We record ball speed, launch angle, spin rate, spin axis, and attack angle on every swing — first in still air, then again with the fan rig running a headwind, tailwind, and crosswind — with your current driver and every demo head we test side by side.
From there we map how each combination behaves once air resistance is actually a factor: does spin rate balloon the shot in a headwind? Does a wide-open spin axis let a crosswind push it further off-line than it would in calm air? Every recommendation traces back to a specific gust-pass number, not a guess.
What Actually Changes in a Driver Fitting
Loft & Face Angle
Adjustable hosels let us dial loft in half-degree steps. Flighting the driver down a degree or two often costs almost nothing in carry once a real headwind is factored in, and can gain you yards back.
Shaft Weight & Flex
Shaft weight shapes swing timing and spin delivery more than the flex label alone. We test across weight classes to find the combination that holds a stable spin number under a gust, not just in the calm bay.
Head Design & MOI
Higher-MOI heads resist twisting on off-center strikes, which matters more when a crosswind is already pulling the ball off your intended line. Lower-MOI heads can suit players who intentionally shape shots into the wind.
Length
A shorter, better-controlled driver frequently outperforms a longer one on center-strike percentage — which matters even more once a crosswind is amplifying any off-center miss.
Center of Gravity
CG location shapes launch and spin independent of loft. A more forward, lower CG generally lowers spin for a flatter, more wind-resistant window.
Grip Size
An oversized or undersized grip changes hand action through impact, which can quietly shift face angle at contact and widen your dispersion once the wind is already pushing you around.
What a Driver Fitting Can Fix
The Crosswind Slice
A left-to-right spin axis tilt is usually a face-to-path issue, but it gets dramatically worse once a crosswind is pushing the same direction. The right shaft and loft combination can shrink that added drift meaningfully.
Ballooning Into a Headwind
Excess spin sends shots up and back, and a headwind punishes that spin harder than calm air ever would. A lower-spin shaft or head, paired with reduced loft, flattens the flight and holds distance.
Losing the Free Yards in a Tailwind
Too much spin in a tailwind still balloons and loses roll-out, wasting the distance the wind should be giving you. A flighted-down spec captures more of that free distance instead of surrendering it back up in the air.
Inconsistent Strike Location
If your dispersion pattern shows strikes scattered across the face, a higher-MOI head paired with the right length and lie can shrink that pattern — which matters most on the days a gust is already stress-testing your margin for error.
